What to expect when competing in U.S. college bowling:

Fall Semester:
  • Bowling is a winter sport, played throughout the middle of the U.S. school year.
  • Tournaments are usually played between late-October and mid-March.
  • Players may have practice or games scheduled during winter break, as the season is played across two semesters.
  • You can expect approximately 10 tournaments in an average season.
Spring Semester:
  • The off-season for college bowling is between the end of the spring semester and the beginning of the fall semester.
  • You can expect to practice a maximum of 8 hours a week during the off-season, and up to 20 hours a week during the competitive season.
  • In addition to skill training, weight lifting and conditioning may be required in preparation for the start of the new season.

Men’s Bowling programs all over the U.S. participate under all governing bodies and divisions.

NCAA – National Collegiate Athletic Association

The NCAA endorses two divisions of men’s collegiate bowling.

Division II
  • Currently sponsor 4 men’s bowling programs
  • Financial aid is available but is not considered bowling scholarship
Division III
  • Currently sponsor 3 men’s bowling programs
  • Financial aid is available but is not considered bowling scholarship
NAIA – National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The NAIA endorses one division of men’s collegiate bowling.

  • Currently sponsor 41 men’s bowling programs
  • Financial aid is available but is not considered bowling scholarship
NJCAA – National Junior College Athletic Association

The NJCAA endorses one division of men’s collegiate bowling.

  • Currently sponsor 24 men’s bowling programs 
  • 12 full bowling scholarships available per men’s college bowling team
