What to expect when competing in U.S. college track and field:

Spring Semester:
  • Track and Field is a Spring sport, held in the second half of the U.S. school year.
  • Events are usually between January and June.
  • You can expect approximately 15-20 team events in an average season.
  • As an individual sport, you will travel with the team but compete individually for team points.
Fall Semester:
  • The Fall semester is the off season for track and field but distance runners often compete in cross country.
  • You can expect to practice a maximum of 8 hours a week during the Fall.
  • Your schedule will feature individual or small group practices.
  • Weight lifting and conditioning will be required in addition to normal training.

 Women’s Track and Field programs all over the U.S. participate under all governing bodies and divisions.

NCAA – National Collegiate Athletic Association

The NCAA endorses three divisions of women’s collegiate track and field.

Division I
  • Currently sponsor 338 women’s college track and field programs
  • 18 full track and field scholarships are available per women’s college track and field team
Division II
  • Currently sponsor 248 women’s college track and field programs
  • 18 full track and field scholarships available per women’s college track and field team
Division III
  • Currently sponsor 324 women’s college track and field programs
  • Financial aid is available but is not considered track and field scholarship
NAIA – National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The NAIA endorses one division of women’s collegiate track and field.

  • Currently sponsor 173 women’s college track and field programs
  • 12 full track and field scholarships available per women’s college track and field team
NJCAA – National Junior College Athletic Association

The NJCAA endorses three divisions of women’s collegiate track and field.

  • Currently sponsor 142 women’s college track and field programs across three divisions
  • 20 full track and field scholarships available across all divisions
